Formula Rearrangement Practice Tool

Levels & boards: IGCSE to AS & A Level (Years 10-13) Cambridge / Pearson Edexcel Maths & Physics; IB DP skills. General algebra practice, not a board-certified paper.

Practise rearranging formulas with exact algebraic answer checking, hints and step-by-step explanations. Choose a difficulty and enter your own expression rather than selecting a memorised answer.

Use * for multiplication, / for division, ^ for powers. Example: (v-u)/t. Letters are case-sensitive.

How to use the Formula Rearrangement Practice Tool

  1. Identify the required subject and the operations currently applied to it.
  2. Undo those operations on both sides; type * for multiplication and keep numerator and denominator brackets.
  3. Check the expression, read the explanation and attempt another question before increasing difficulty.

A worked example

To make a the subject of v=u+at, subtract u to obtain v-u=at, then divide the complete expression by t: a=(v-u)/t. The expression v-u/t is different because division is performed before subtraction.

What to check before using your result

  • Variables are case-sensitive. Write 2*a rather than 2a, and use ^ for integer powers.
  • The checker compares rational expressions, not arbitrary functions such as sin or square roots.
  • Equivalent simplified expressions still inherit restrictions from original denominators.

Make your next practice session count

Use this result as a starting point, not a label for your ability. Record one error, explain its cause and complete a similar question without the worked answer. Then try a different example to check that you understood the method rather than remembered a number.

Questions about this tool

Why is my answer rejected even though it looks similar?

Missing brackets can change the expression. Check whether every term in a sum should be divided, and use the variable letters shown in the question.

Can I keep trying after a wrong answer?

Yes. The session score counts only the first checked answer for a question, while later attempts support learning.

Do I need an account or need to send my results?

No account is required by this tool. Its calculations run in your browser. Tools with a Save on this device option store data locally only when you choose it; your browser, device policy and storage settings can affect persistence. Export important records before clearing browser data. This describes the tool, not any separate site analytics or contact-form processing.
