Significant Figures and Standard Form Tool
Levels & boards: Years 8-13; IGCSE, GCSE, A Level and IB Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel, OxfordAQA and IB Maths / Physics. Notation and reporting rules depend on the question.
Round decimal values to significant figures and convert them into scientific and engineering notation. This tool reads your written digits so trailing zeros and measurement precision are not silently discarded.
Made for independent learners in Hong Kong and across the GCC: the UAE (including Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah), Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. Choose your exam board and syllabus, wherever you study.

How to use the Significant Figures and Standard Form Tool
- Enter the number exactly as written, including decimal zeros or an e exponent.
- Choose one to twelve significant figures and calculate.
- Compare the rounded form with the stated input precision and avoid implying extra measurement accuracy.
A worked example
0.004995 rounded to three significant figures becomes 0.00500, written clearly as 5.00 x 10^-3. By contrast, the unqualified integer 1500 is ambiguous: its trailing zeros may or may not be significant. Writing 1.500 x 10^3 removes that ambiguity.
What to check before using your result
- The rounding convention here is decimal half-up: ties round away from zero. Some contexts require another convention.
- A result with more printed zeros does not make the original measurement more accurate.
- The precision of a bare zero depends on the measurement context.
Make your next practice session count
Use this result as a starting point, not a label for your ability. Record one error, explain its cause and complete a similar question without the worked answer. Then try a different example to check that you understood the method rather than remembered a number.

Questions about this tool
Why use scientific notation for an integer?
It makes intended significant figures explicit. 1.20 x 10^3 carries three significant figures even though 1200 alone can be ambiguous.
Is standard form the same as engineering notation?
Scientific standard form uses a coefficient from 1 up to, but not including, 10. Engineering notation uses exponents that are multiples of three.
Do I need an account or need to send my results?
No account is required by this tool. Its calculations run in your browser. Tools with a Save on this device option store data locally only when you choose it; your browser, device policy and storage settings can affect persistence. Export important records before clearing browser data. This describes the tool, not any separate site analytics or contact-form processing.
